Most dishwashers, depending on their composition, concentration, and form, are either caustic or irritating. They are made from strong detergents derived from petroleum refining and strong alkalis that give them a pH between 10.5 and 12.0. Exposure to these diluted products can cause skin irritation or burns. Many of them also contain washing soda (sodium carbonate), and sometimes phosphates, which pollute waterways. In addition, they may contain sodium silicate so that the dishwasher does not spoil, surfactants so that no water droplets remain on the dishes, and flavoring. Some products contain dry bleach, which is activated in the machine when mixed with water. This means that when you open the dishwasher, chlorine vapors are released along with the rest of the steam. This can lead to eye irritation and difficulty breathing, especially in people who already suffer from this problem. An ordinary person is unlikely to expose themselves to dishwasher detergent for a long time. However, if you have children in your home, it may be better for you to switch from tablets and liquids to powder. Children and animals are often poisoned with pills, so if you keep them in the house, make sure they are out of reach.
Try to replace
All dishwashers leave chemical traces on your plates in one way or another. However, if you want to reduce their impact, try the following.
Use powders that generally contain fewer harmful chemicals than the liquid varieties. Besides, they are unlikely to be eaten by small children.
Use smaller amounts of the product. As a rule, two tablespoons of the product in a closed-type machine and one tablespoon in an open-type machine are enough for the usual amount of dishes.
Use brands without phosphates or those that contain few of them. They are much less harmful to the environment.
If the purchased products are not suitable for you, take 1/2 teaspoon of clean soap powder (otherwise there will be too much foam) with three tablespoons of baking soda.
The plates can be washed in two teaspoons of borax, previously diluted in hot water, and rinsed with vinegar.
Try to wash very dirty dishes with 1/4 cup of sodium hexametaphosphate, a derivative of trisodium phosphate.
Sprinkle the plates with baking soda before loading them into the machine, and then add detergent only to the tray of the closed container. This will reduce the amount of product used, and the plates will still be clean (just do not pour baking soda on aluminum pans, otherwise they will become cloudy).
