The computer game Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis is a tactical shooter game about a fictional conflict between the USSR and NATO during the Cold War. Subsequently, add-ons were also released for the game under the names "Red Hammer" and "Resistance". In the Red Hammer campaign, the player can feel like a Russian soldier, and in the Resistance campaign, he can play the role of an ordinary islander who later became a partisan and fought on the side of NATO against the occupation by Soviet troops. The game is notable for the fact that the simulation of combat looks very realistic in it. There is a lot of military equipment, including tanks, airplanes, helicopters, boats, infantry fighting vehicles and much more. The spaces in the game are completely open and the player can freely move wherever he wants. There are several islands with different landscapes in the game. Realism is also added by the fact that the death of a player can occur after one successful enemy shot, unlike most games of a similar genre, where the main character has a so-called scale of lives. The game also features a level editor that allows you to create your own missions and campaigns, while choosing either side of the conflict.
Due to its realism and complexity, the game was mostly positively reviewed by critics, with the exception of graphics and animation in it. Many critics felt that some objects in the game at close range are of poor quality, and animation is not visible when soldiers interact with vehicles. The game aroused more positive emotions among fans, who created many amateur campaigns, missions, pieces of equipment, locations, and other attributes of the game. Due to the ease of creating modifications to the game, it has the status of one of the most modifiable. Despite the fact that the game was released back in 2001, it still has fans, and some of them even consider it the best, compared to later military simulators, such as the ArmA series of games from the same publisher. Players also have the opportunity to fight online in two ways: via the Internet and over a local network. The various missions of the online game, such as the battle for the sector, capture the flag, hold the city, and others, were also appreciated by both critics and fans mostly positively.
